Narcissistic leaders

“Narcissistic leaders tend to do six things when their decisions or actions are challenged.

  • First, they deny they’ve done anything wrong.
  • Then, they blame others for the situation.
  • Then they shore up allies and isolate complainants.
  • Then, they feel indignant that they’ve been challenged or criticized.
  • Finally, they retaliate – they perceive all critical feedback as a personal attack and will always retaliate.

Whether narcissists get away with their denying, blaming, lobbying, marginalising, indignation, and retaliations depends largely on:

(1) the strength of will and conviction of those around them

and

(2) whether accountability systems outside the organisation are independent and robust.”
